A refrigerator electrical cord is a heavy-duty cord with a three-prong plug, two electrical prongs and a ground prong. Although replacement cords are available, in many cases it may be more efficient and cost effective to just repair the part of the cord that has been compromised in some way. This repair can be done by anyone with do-it-yourself experience and basic home shop tools.
Check the cord for the area that has been compromised, cracked, torn or broken. Cut the cord at this exact spot with a wire cutter. Unscrew the holding screws on a new plug. Make sure it is a three prong plug that is rated for the amperage of the refrigerator.
Virtually all household refrigerators are rated to be plugged into a 15 ampere circuit, so make sure the plug is rated at 15 amperes. Strip the wires back with a wire stripper so that one-half inch of bare wire shows on each of the three wires.. Attach the wires to the plug prongs. The ground wire is attached to the green screw in the plug. The neutral wire, which will have either writing or some type of protrusion on the plastic wire sheath, is attached to the silver screw, and the hot wire, which will have a smooth plastic wire sheath, is attached to the brass screw.
Tighten these connections firmly with a screwdriver. Re-attach the butt end of the plug to the top end with the wires attached. Tighten down the holding screws securely.
